Winter Case Studies

Can you Spot The Common Denominator?....

Mr P decided to clear his garden path after the first winter snow fall.

He forced his muscles to perform a repetitive, twisting movement in a sustained, flexed position. This was beyond the normal level and type of exercise his muscles were used to and he strained his back which quickly became painful and stiff.

Trying to work in these unusual, repetitive positions for only short periods of time and reversing the action by frequently placing the hands in the small of the back and arching, will help prevent injury to the spine.

Snow clearing strains and sprains

ice RTA and whiplash

Miss K was unfortunate enough to be involved in a Motor Vehicle Collision when the car behind her skidded on the ice.

She suffered a Whiplash injury to her neck when she was forcefully thrown forward and then backward. This resulted in micro trauma to the muscles, ligaments and tendons and a lot of protective muscle spasm.

Gently keeping the neck moving, using cold packs in the first 48 hours to  reduce inflammation and spasm and then later hot packs to relax muscle and improve circulation, all aids recovery following traumatic injury.

Mrs J has arthritic knees through wear and tear which always feel worse during the winter.

She  has kept her knees moving and her thigh muscles strong by doing some exercises and walking every day, wrapping up to keep her joints warm.

arthritis cold and mobility

She found, however, that the hard, uneven and slippery ground was more of a challenge than she thought and was finding her balance more of a problem than her knee pain.

Specific balance exercises as well as muscle   strengthening work will combine to increase      confidence when keeping  active in winter conditions.
